28 February 2019 – Malaysian travel marketplace LokaLocal will introduce its strategic digital solutions to accelerate transformation in experience-based tourism at ITB Berlin 2019 next month. LokaLocal is the largest travel platform in Malaysia, where global travellers can book activities hosted by locals with unique interests and skills to share. It currently has over 800 experiences across the country, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor and Perak.
In May, the marketplace will release its upcoming innovations, which aim to propel the country’s digital movement. To strengthen their vision of bringing truly local experiences to visitors, LokaLocal will work with cultural event organisers and space owners to tap on curated workshops and the growing trend of festival tourism.
The mobile app and SaaS development will also be launched, enabling small to medium sized merchants to promote their experiences with greater flexibility and convenience on a dedicated software.
Alongside these, LokaLocal will embark on strategic partnership with travel technology companies in Malaysia, such as Fonebud IoT, which offers e-SIM based global data roaming services, allowing travellers to enjoy high speed internet connection, so they can experience destinations like a local.
Through LokaLocal, visitors can explore off-the-beaten-track destinations, workshops and activities that deliver a social impact within the local community. Meanwhile, locals can earn an extra income and improve their outreach as hosts.
“We focus on self-driven people, and the role they can play as local experts is an incredible opportunity for creative entrepreneurs to tap into their passions and unlock economic opportunities through the platform.” – Yoon Khen Chin, Founder of LokaLocal
LokaLocal will also launch “101 Experiences in Perak” with Tourism Perak in Berlin, inviting international visitors to explore the Malaysian state’s hidden gems and local activities.
Following this collaboration, anyone can book immersive tours and workshops in Perak, hosted by locals with fascinating interests and skills. Some of these experiences include crafting labu sayong pottery at Kuala Kangsar, making traditional lanterns with a lantern master, learning urban sketching with an artist, spending the night in a village or jungle homestay, cruising down the Perak River, and visiting lesser known neighbourhoods such as Teluk Intan and Kuala Sepetang.
According to Lonely Planet, Perak is among the Top 10 Must Visit Regions of 2017, whereas its capital city, Ipoh is one of the best Asian destinations to visit in 2016, and among the Top 3 Best Coffee Towns in Asia. In 2018, Ipoh was one of the places in Malaysia, alongside Johor Bahru, to be named by as one of the Top 10 Destinations for Local Food.
This will position the platform as a key player in smart tourism, which in turn helps to highlight Perak on the global stage. LokaLocal will demonstrate its technologies and introduce its local experiences ITB Berlin 2019 from 5-10 March 2019, Messe Berlin, Malaysia Pavillion, Hall 26A, Tourism Perak Stand No. 43.
